Not really being a “yard person” on an in-city 1/8th acre, I was faced with lots of dead leaves (oak, mainly) & fallen twigs & branches. The local grocery store sells lawn/leaf bags in packs of 5 only. I suppose a customer could press for an entire case, but I figured someone out there (Associated Bag, of course!) could sell in sufficient quantity to supply me. I just did a simple “Lawn & Leaf bag” search on Google, and Associated Bag came up first. While good mixes with bad on the Internet, the Associated Bag web page sounded just a little too real to be a “con”, and you aren’t! I think my first order was just one bale of lawn/leaf bags, and Wow! Delivery time is unbelievably quick. You are, indeed, the go-to folks for bags. I haven’t even taken time to ponder all your other goods. As far as I am concerned, Associated Bag is “On The Block!”

My wife was a potter for 32 years. In the late 70’s she ordered bags for something from Associated Bag. All was well. When we went into business in 1985 with gourmet popcorn, we worked with Associated Bag for our Popcorn Wagon in Flint. Most of our popcorn was bagged. Associated Bag was quick to ship, and we developed an account basis to pay at the end of the month. I have used Associated Bag at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica to purchase bags for bread that we slice and give to people in need. We also began a ministry called Motown Soup where all the workers are volunteers and we do use yet another variety of bags from Associated Bag. Again, quick service, samples when I need to look at something new. We probably use 20,000 bags per year as we market our soup mixes. I know that when I order, I will have the bags in 2 business days. Always in stock. Always shipped right away. Last year, our profits of $55,000 from Motown Soup were given to Detroit area shelters and soup kitchens. Thank you Associated Bag for your good products and your service. When we go backpacking, we put food up on ropes in the trees to keep the animals out of it. This is for their protection and our own. I am a high school band director in Fairmont, WV. We are known as the Busy Bee Band & Honeybees (our school mascot is the Bee) and currently have 180 members (25% of the student body). We are considered the most traveled band in the state - with performance venues ranging from the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA (2000) to - not one, but two Presidential Inaugural Parades in Washington, DC (1989 & 2001) as well as performance sights such as Walt Disney World (11 performances since 1974), New York City, Toronto, Ontario - and recently Nassau, Bahamas.

 

I point this out because we are using only four fund raising ideas per year for our group to reduce the individual student price for travel. But our single, most impressive fund-raiser is - believe it or not - California Citrus - namely Sunkist Navel Oranges and Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit.

 

This fundraiser has been in place since 1984 when we first partnered with Sunkist - and in those past 25 years we have sold over three-million pounds of citrus. Each December and again in late February, we pre-order cases of oranges and grapefruit for our two major sales. We offer to our customers a 40-lb case - either straight product or mixed, half & half; 20-lb cases - again, straight order or mixed as well as 10-lb bags of either oranges or grapefruit. This month, December, 2009 - our group reached another milestone. Our pre-sold order was an even 102,000 pounds! (That’s three tractor-trailer loads!)

 

Now you may ask, how does Associated Bag Company come into play with this fundraiser? Simple! Our greatest number of orders is for the 10-lb bag of Oranges. And since we hand pack the 10-lb bag orders, we need a quality product that not only has strength and durability, but must also look so “clear” it’s as though there is nothing between the citrus and the customer!

 

And why is Associated Bag our choice? Well, when you have over 2,000 orders alone for 10-lbs bags of oranges, and 500 orders for grapefruit, we need to purchase 4,000 bags so that we have plenty for our follow-up sale later in February. And here comes the best part, Associated Bag was nearly $30.00 less per/thousand than another leading (but nameless) manufacturer we had used in previous years. And on top of that, your product was sent UPS ground and was received at our school just two days later! WOW, What Service! So, out went your competitor’s catalog - for good!

 

I can honestly tell you that our group will profit over thirty-thousand dollars on this ONE sale alone. Everything has to be right, including the plastic bag! Thanks to your part in this scenario, the product looks great and is well protected during handling and distribution to our customers.

I would like to express my gratitude for the efforts of your Sales Correspondent, Tammy Kowalski. I recently placed an order for some zipper bags with your company and on their arrival I noticed that the printing on the cover bags (containing the zipper bags) was very resistant to rub-off. I am a professional archaeologist and we use your zipper bags to hold artifacts discovered in the field and those placed in permanent storage. We write identifying information on the outside of these bags using a commonly available permanent marker. However, we have a problem with the ink from these markers rubbing-off due to the attrition of handling. When I noticed the resistant ink on the packaging bags, I sent an e-mail to your company inquiring about its source. Luckily, Tammy responded and we went through a series of e-mails regarding the ink on these overbags. She went to great effort to find the source of the ink. Ultimately, it was found to be available only in bulk form. However, one of her colleagues suggested a marker that they use and she sent me some samples. I ran some attrition tests and found that these markers are indeed better than the ones we use. I am now in the process of purchasing markers from that manufacturer for field trials.

 

The point of this message is to give credit where it is due. Tammy went out of her way to research a subject that I believe was “above and beyond the call of duty.” This is rare in American business today. There is so much focus on short-term gains and little effort toward long-term benefits. What Tammy did will help us reduce the number of artifacts that we have to discard because the identifying information has been lost. It will also ensure that the information written on bags permanently stored in museums will not be lost due to handling. I have been a customer of yours since the mid-1980s and have always received great service from your company. Tammy’s efforts reinforced that opinion and will lead to even more business from me in the future and from as many other people as I can convince to order products from Associated Bag.

The reason I buy from Associated Bag is that you offer genuine customer service – the kind we hardly see anymore. I can always get a friendly representative on the phone who actually knows about the products and can answer my questions.

 

When I had a tough packaging problem I needed to see a single item as a sample. Your staff sent it promptly, along with some even better suggestions for solving my packaging issues. When I called your competitors and asked the same question they told me that they wouldn’t provide a sample – I would have to buy a 500-piece case and take my chances. If the product didn’t fit my needs I could always return the entire case... at my expense.

 

I’m sure if you search hard enough on the internet you can find someone who is two cents cheaper, but believe me – it’s worth far more than two cents to get superior products, service, and delivery. Please don’t ever change.

Although I've been doing business with you for a few years, I may have the distinction of being the least important Associated Bag customer. If I never purchased another product, you wouldn't notice a delta in your top or bottom lines. Nevertheless, I want you to know how satisfied I am with Associated Bag. I believe that in today's "do more with less" and "self service" business climate, customer service has suffered. "Payment" for customer service comes in the form of repeat business, increased sales and a growing customer base. Clearly, Associated Bag not only understands this concept, but has turned it to their advantage.

Traci Gauthier, Sales Correspondent, has distinguished herself among the best at providing superior customer service. A day has not passed when I have placed an inquiry to, or request with, Traci, and she has failed to respond. The manner in which Traci approaches customer service provides a perfect example not only for her Associated Bag colleagues, but your entire industry. Traci's attention to detail and excellent customer service has been responsible for me moving an ever-expanding portion of my business to Associated Bag. In fact, as new needs arise, I now check with Associated Bag first. I can only imagine that Traci has had a similar effect on others.

I also want you to know of the excellent customer service that your Harrisburg warehouse Staff provides. Even the uninitiated can clearly see that there is a lot going on at your Harrisburg warehouse. However, despite the workload and activity there, everyone has always been cordial and has provided superior customer service -- qualities not often found in a warehouse setting.

Over the years, I've noticed a disappointing trend at large and small companies. As the claims of superior customer service increase, the delivery of customer service often declines. This inverse proportion poorly reflects upon those that believe lip service is an acceptable alternative to customer service.

I believe that a true measure of a company is not how it conducts itself in one instance, but rather the sum of its conduct during many instances over a long period. Considering my experiences with Associated Bag, I'm convinced that you understand the value of customer service, the benefits that accrue to your customers and Associated Bag when you provide excellent customer service and your true commitment to customers' complete satisfaction. I have dealt with many companies in my 27 years in business and have experienced all levels of customer service. Many companies today have decided that a great way to cut costs is to minimize their customer service expenditures. Exceedingly long wait times on phone calls, limiting samples to no more than 3 or 4, extra fees for handling, and rude or poorly trained sales representatives are some of the more common examples of the poor customer service I have experienced in recent years.

So, it has been nothing short of amazing to deal with Associated Bag Company these last two years. The phone is always answered immediately and by someone who is well informed, helpful beyond words and cheerful. I have never been asked to limit my sample requests (as one of your competitors does) or pay extra fees for handling. But I was particularly impressed by the way your Customer Service Dept. handled a return we needed to make the other day. It was all done with such class and ease. I still can’t believe it.

Associated Bag Company deserves to take a bow for remembering that the customer is most important and for beautifully executing the policy. I never even check your competitor’s prices anymore. Partly because I have found that yours are almost always lower but also because it’s just not worth taking the chance on another supplier.

Ms. Traci Gauthier also assisted me once or twice in Chad’s absence. I was very impressed with the level of care and attention I was given on several recent inquiries I made on slidergrip bags, polybags and cable ties and poly labels. Chad communicated with me like a long-lost cousin and sent me numerous follow-ups and samples. Although I did not purchase your slidergrip bags due to not meeting my exact size specification, I was very impressed with the level of service I received.

Chad was extremely useful in helping me investigate custom labels for one of my packages, which for me was very valuable since I was not experienced with these labels. He helped me select and design a custom label for one of my packages which has dramatically improved our productivity and professionalism. We are still working on engineering the best way to apply the labels to my package, but I am confident that he will do everything within his power to help me as much as he can.

I think it is very rare in this day and age to find a company such as yours, dealing in commodity type items, that offers such exceptional levels of service.
