We are a homeowners association that is challenged each year to find white paper bags that are reasonably priced for our Christmas Eve luminaries. We have 52 homes and require about 250 bags. In searching the internet for the bags and candles, we found prices that were extremely high. But, when we found the Associated Bag price for 500 bags, we felt as if we had hit the jackpot. I would like to express my gratitude for the efforts of your Sales Correspondent, Tammy Kowalski. I recently placed an order for some zipper bags with your company and on their arrival I noticed that the printing on the cover bags (containing the zipper bags) was very resistant to rub-off. I am a professional archaeologist and we use your zipper bags to hold artifacts discovered in the field and those placed in permanent storage. We write identifying information on the outside of these bags using a commonly available permanent marker. However, we have a problem with the ink from these markers rubbing-off due to the attrition of handling. When I noticed the resistant ink on the packaging bags, I sent an e-mail to your company inquiring about its source. Luckily, Tammy responded and we went through a series of e-mails regarding the ink on these overbags. She went to great effort to find the source of the ink. Ultimately, it was found to be available only in bulk form. However, one of her colleagues suggested a marker that they use and she sent me some samples. I ran some attrition tests and found that these markers are indeed better than the ones we use. I am now in the process of purchasing markers from that manufacturer for field trials.

 

The point of this message is to give credit where it is due. Tammy went out of her way to research a subject that I believe was “above and beyond the call of duty.” This is rare in American business today. There is so much focus on short-term gains and little effort toward long-term benefits. What Tammy did will help us reduce the number of artifacts that we have to discard because the identifying information has been lost. It will also ensure that the information written on bags permanently stored in museums will not be lost due to handling. I have been a customer of yours since the mid-1980s and have always received great service from your company. Tammy’s efforts reinforced that opinion and will lead to even more business from me in the future and from as many other people as I can convince to order products from Associated Bag.

The reason I buy from Associated Bag is that you offer genuine customer service – the kind we hardly see anymore. I can always get a friendly representative on the phone who actually knows about the products and can answer my questions.

 

When I had a tough packaging problem I needed to see a single item as a sample. Your staff sent it promptly, along with some even better suggestions for solving my packaging issues. When I called your competitors and asked the same question they told me that they wouldn’t provide a sample – I would have to buy a 500-piece case and take my chances. If the product didn’t fit my needs I could always return the entire case... at my expense.

 

I’m sure if you search hard enough on the internet you can find someone who is two cents cheaper, but believe me – it’s worth far more than two cents to get superior products, service, and delivery. Please don’t ever change.

 

P.S. – Dear Associated Bag execs: some day you’re going to be in a meeting and someone from Accounting is going to say, “You know if we cut back on customer service staff we could save some real money.” Please feel free to kick them for me and keep on kicking them until they come to their senses – your superior customer service is THE reason I buy from you. Although I've been doing business with you for a few years, I may have the distinction of being the least important Associated Bag customer. Traci Gauthier, Sales Correspondent, has distinguished herself among the best at providing superior customer service. A day has not passed when I have placed an inquiry to, or request with, Traci, and she has failed to respond. The manner in which Traci approaches customer service provides a perfect example not only for her Associated Bag colleagues, but your entire industry. Traci's attention to detail and excellent customer service has been responsible for me moving an ever-expanding portion of my business to Associated Bag. In fact, as new needs arise, I now check with Associated Bag first. I can only imagine that Traci has had a similar effect on others.

I also want you to know of the excellent customer service that your Harrisburg warehouse Staff provides. Even the uninitiated can clearly see that there is a lot going on at your Harrisburg warehouse. However, despite the workload and activity there, everyone has always been cordial and has provided superior customer service -- qualities not often found in a warehouse setting.

Over the years, I've noticed a disappointing trend at large and small companies. As the claims of superior customer service increase, the delivery of customer service often declines. This inverse proportion poorly reflects upon those that believe lip service is an acceptable alternative to customer service.

I believe that a true measure of a company is not how it conducts itself in one instance, but rather the sum of its conduct during many instances over a long period. Considering my experiences with Associated Bag, I'm convinced that you understand the value of customer service, the benefits that accrue to your customers and Associated Bag when you provide excellent customer service and your true commitment to customers' complete satisfaction. Please pass on my heart-felt, "Thank You" to Traci Gauthier and your Staff at your Harrisburg warehouse for making your 100% Satisfaction Guarantee something more than a slogan in your catalog.

I have dealt with many companies in my 27 years in business and have experienced all levels of customer service. Many companies today have decided that a great way to cut costs is to minimize their customer service expenditures. Exceedingly long wait times on phone calls, limiting samples to no more than 3 or 4, extra fees for handling, and rude or poorly trained sales representatives are some of the more common examples of the poor customer service I have experienced in recent years.

So, it has been nothing short of amazing to deal with Associated Bag Company these last two years. The phone is always answered immediately and by someone who is well informed, helpful beyond words and cheerful. I have never been asked to limit my sample requests (as one of your competitors does) or pay extra fees for handling. But I was particularly impressed by the way your Customer Service Dept. handled a return we needed to make the other day. It was all done with such class and ease. I still can’t believe it.

Associated Bag Company deserves to take a bow for remembering that the customer is most important and for beautifully executing the policy. I never even check your competitor’s prices anymore. Partly because I have found that yours are almost always lower but also because it’s just not worth taking the chance on another supplier.

I think it is very rare in this day and age to find a company such as yours, dealing in commodity type items, that offers such exceptional levels of service. I have dealt with many other suppliers such as your company, but have never been serviced to the level that your people helped me on every transaction.

I must say that your company has won my admiration and respect. I placed an order for bubble envelopes and Mary Daly was the representative that handled my telephone call. Ms. Daly, to date, is the most pleasant person I have ever dealt with. And I have dealt with thousands of customer service reps from coast to coast over the past two decades.

I received my order very quickly…I could not believe an order could be expedited with such efficiency. Upon examination of the envelopes, I then realized that I had ordered the wrong size. This was 100% my fault! I called back and explained my predicament to Mary.

She immediately made me feel comfortable, offering me the option to return the order and reorder the correct size. To facilitate that, she sent me samples which I received the NEXT DAY! Ms. Daly also put me in contact with another extraordinary employee, Sherry Mlynczak, for the handling of the return. By now, I was beside myself, never before, have I received such outstanding, “red carpet” treatment from any company.

I am writing to acknowledge that Associated Bag Company is the most professional and outstanding company that I have ever dealt with, and with employees like Ms. Daly and Ms. Mlynczak, I will not hesitate to order anything that I may ever need without looking elsewhere.
